Learn Portuguese online

Portuguese lessons distinguish clearly between European and Brazilian varieties, because pronunciation, pronoun placement and even some everyday vocabulary differ enough to matter. Teachers state which they teach. Brazilian Portuguese students often come for work, music or relocation; European Portuguese students often come for residency, family or citizenship exams. Either way, lessons front-load pronunciation — nasal vowels and reduced unstressed syllables are the main listening obstacle — then build conversational grammar, past tenses and the personal infinitive that has no English equivalent.

What you'll learn

  • Nasal vowels, reduced syllables and the pronunciation gap between varieties
  • Present, pretérito perfeito and imperfeito in everyday speech
  • Pronoun placement and the differences between Brazilian and European usage
  • The personal infinitive and other structures with no English parallel
  • Vocabulary for work, travel, bureaucracy and social life
  • Listening to natural speed speech from Brazil and Portugal
  • CIPLE, CELPE-Bras or school exam preparation

How lessons work here

  1. Find a teacher. Browse profiles with headline, country, spoken languages, experience, credentials and student reviews. Every public profile has been verified before it goes live.
  2. Book a slot. Teachers publish real availability, including exceptions and holidays. You pick a time and the booking is confirmed against that calendar, so double-bookings are blocked at database level.
  3. Join the lesson room. Lessons run in the browser with live video and audio — nothing to install. Screen sharing and shared tools sit alongside the video.
  4. Use the tools built for this subject. The lesson room includes a shared document you both edit in real time; flashcard decks with spaced repetition, importable from CSV or JSON; a whiteboard for grammar explanations and sentence diagrams; quizzes that are graded on the server, so results cannot be edited; file and link sharing for texts, audio and homework.
  5. Get homework and keep the thread. Teachers set tasks with attachments and deadlines, comment on what you submit, and keep a shared learning plan you can both see between lessons.
  6. Track progress. Attendance and a simple lesson rating are recorded by the teacher, quizzes are graded on the server, and a progress report can be generated for you — or for a parent or guardian.

Who it's for

  • Learners moving to Portugal or Brazil for work or study
  • Spanish speakers who need to stop speaking portuñol
  • Music and culture enthusiasts learning through songs and lyrics

Lessons run from A1 absolute beginner through to C1/C2 advanced, following the CEFR levels. Teachers place you in the first session and revisit the level as you progress.

Levels and lesson formats

  • One-to-one lessons — the standard format, usually 30, 45 or 60 minutes.
  • Recurring weekly slots — booked from the teacher's live availability calendar.
  • Group workshops — teachers can run scheduled workshops with limited places and a waiting list.
  • Trial or one-off sessions — useful for a single problem, an exam panic or checking the fit before committing.

Lesson length, cancellation notice and any price are set by each teacher and shown on their profile before you book. Teachers can also share materials, quizzes and certificates of completion with public verification.

Frequently asked questions

Brazilian or European Portuguese?

Choose by where you are going. They are mutually intelligible but sound quite different; learning one and later adapting is easier than mixing both from the start.

I speak Spanish. How much transfers?

A great deal of vocabulary and grammar, but pronunciation and false friends need deliberate work. Teachers who handle Spanish speakers focus exactly there.

Is citizenship exam preparation available?

Yes, with teachers who list CIPLE or A2 exam preparation, including the speaking and listening formats.

Why is spoken Portuguese so hard to follow?

Unstressed vowels get reduced or dropped, especially in European Portuguese. Graded listening and dictation practice is the standard fix.
