Learn Hindi online
Hindi lessons can go two ways depending on your goal: spoken Hindi for conversation with family, colleagues or while travelling, or full literacy including the Devanagari script. Teachers cover both and will sequence them to your aim. The grammar work centres on gender agreement, postpositions and the ergative construction in past tense, which is the structure most learners find genuinely new. Pronunciation focuses on retroflex and aspirated consonants that English does not distinguish. Bollywood songs and film dialogue are commonly used as listening material, alongside everyday conversation practice.

How lessons work here
- Find a teacher. Browse profiles with headline, country, spoken languages, experience, credentials and student reviews. Every public profile has been verified before it goes live.
- Book a slot. Teachers publish real availability, including exceptions and holidays. You pick a time and the booking is confirmed against that calendar, so double-bookings are blocked at database level.
- Join the lesson room. Lessons run in the browser with live video and audio — nothing to install. Screen sharing and shared tools sit alongside the video.
- Use the tools built for this subject. The lesson room includes a shared document you both edit in real time; flashcard decks with spaced repetition, importable from CSV or JSON; a whiteboard for grammar explanations and sentence diagrams; quizzes that are graded on the server, so results cannot be edited; file and link sharing for texts, audio and homework.
- Get homework and keep the thread. Teachers set tasks with attachments and deadlines, comment on what you submit, and keep a shared learning plan you can both see between lessons.
- Track progress. Attendance and a simple lesson rating are recorded by the teacher, quizzes are graded on the server, and a progress report can be generated for you — or for a parent or guardian.

- If you want to learn it, create a student account and browse the full teacher directory — several teachers cover more than the subjects listed on their headline.
Frequently asked questions
Can I learn spoken Hindi without the script?
Yes, using romanised transliteration. Teachers will still recommend Devanagari eventually because it makes vocabulary and pronunciation more accurate.
How different is Hindi from Urdu?
Spoken conversational Hindi and Urdu overlap heavily; the scripts and formal vocabulary differ. Many teachers can explain both.
How long does Devanagari take?
Two to four weeks to read slowly, a few months to read comfortably with regular practice.
Can lessons use Bollywood material?
Yes. Teachers commonly build listening lessons around songs and film clips you choose.
