SZA adds another cultural milestone to her résumé as honorary chair of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's 2026-27 season-opening gala, while her VANSZA collection and Instagram advocacy for rising artists show her expanding influence beyond music.
SZA's influence keeps expanding far beyond the recording studio. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter has been named an honorary chair for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's 2026-27 season-opening gala, a role that places her at the intersection of music, dance, and cultural legacy. It is the latest chapter in a career that has already redefined contemporary R&B and shattered chart records.
A Gala Rooted in Legacy
The Opening Night Gala, set for December 2, kicks off Alvin Ailey's five-week holiday season at New York City Center, running through January 3, 2027. SZA will serve as honorary chair alongside award-winning filmmakers Tonya Lee and Spike Lee. The evening's centerpiece is the world premiere of Power of Love, a new dance work inspired by the music of Luther Vandross and choreographed by Jamar Roberts. The piece was created in collaboration with Primary Wave Music and The Luther Vandross Estate.
For SZA, the honor carries deep personal meaning. "My mother and I go to Alvin Ailey every year for Mother's Day," she said in a statement. "Revelations has informed both of our lives greatly. I love Luther and I'm honored to be a part of something so integral to our history, Black expression and creativity." It's a rare public reflection on the traditions that shaped her, and it aligns with an artist whose work has always been deeply diaristic.
A Tribute to Luther Vandross
The gala's Power of Love premiere arrives just weeks after Vandross is posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on November 14 in Los Angeles. The production, developed by Vandross's longtime creative collaborators Marcus Miller and Ron Gilyard alongside writer/director/producer Reginald Hudlin, will feature a suite of the late icon's greatest hits, including "Never Too Much," "Here and Now," "Dance With My Father," and "A House Is Not a Home."
"Luther and Ailey are a match made in heaven," Miller said. "We chose which songs to include which reflected the breadth of Luther's career and could also translate well to dance. We made slightly new arrangements of a few songs and added some small touches to tickle the ear with some musical surprises." The evening will also feature an excerpt of Hymn, Judith Jamison's Emmy Award-winning tribute to Alvin Ailey, returning to the repertory after nearly 15 years. The honorary committee includes Cynthia Erivo, LL Cool J, Samara Joy, Gayle King, and Audra McDonald.
VANSZA: From Her Closet to the Shelves
SZA's cultural footprint extends into fashion as well. Vans has unveiled VANSZA, her two-part debut collection with the brand, arriving nearly a year after she was first announced in a creative lead role. The first drop lands October 22 through Vans.com and select retailers, with a second drop scheduled for April 8, 2027.
Drop 1 reworks two classic Vans silhouettes: a black-and-white Knu Skool Mule and an Authentic with a worn-in finish and fish graphics. The Authentic features a functional twist drawn directly from SZA's own habits — its heel folds down entirely, modeled on her tendency to step on the backs of her sneakers. Drop 2 introduces the LX Tabi Hiker, a split-toe silhouette with cable laces and no traditional tongue, available in three colorways, alongside a RealTree-style camo Knu Skool.
SZA joins a growing wave of musicians taking permanent creative positions within fashion houses, from Pharrell Williams at Louis Vuitton to A$AP Rocky at PUMA. Her approach, however, is notably personal: the collection is meant to reflect how she actually lives, not a themed capsule built around her image.
Championing the Next Generation
Beyond awards and brand deals, SZA has become one of music's most trusted curators. With over 23 million Instagram followers, she regularly uses her platform to spotlight rising artists and peers alike — from Raye and Steve Lacy to Natanya, Flowerovlove, and Nomi. Her endorsement carries weight: when she shared Flowerovlove's single "Boys" in May 2024, writing "This girl and this song is fire as hell," it marked the beginning of a years-long public co-sign that preceded the British artist's debut album, Mini Skirt Warrior.
That instinct to elevate others is consistent with an artist who has co-written for Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Travis Scott, and who received the Hal David Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2024. Her second album, SOS, became the first by a woman to spend 100 weeks in the Billboard 200's top ten, while "Kill Bill" ranked as the third best-selling song of 2023.
What Comes Next
With the Alvin Ailey gala, the VANSZA rollout, and her continued advocacy for emerging talent, SZA is operating at a rare intersection of commercial power and cultural stewardship. The gala proceeds will benefit the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, supporting new works and student scholarships — a cause that resonates with her own history of mentorship through music. For fans, these moves signal an artist unafraid to step outside the studio and into institutions where her voice can shape what comes next.
As she told the gala's organizers, being part of something "so integral to our history, Black expression and creativity" is an honor. For SZA, it's also a natural extension of everything she's built.
