Sophia Laforteza will rejoin KATSEYE in the first week of January 2027, HYBE x Geffen Records has confirmed, after stepping back from the group to prioritize her mental health.

KATSEYE fans finally have a date to circle on the calendar. HYBE x Geffen Records has confirmed that Sophia Laforteza will resume group activities with the global girl group beginning the first week of January 2027, roughly five months after she announced she was stepping away to focus on her mental health.

What the Label Announced

In an Oct. 8 statement, the group's label said it was "happy to share that Sophia will resume group activities with KATSEYE beginning the first week of January 2027," adding that she had "been prioritizing her health and well-being with our full support and resources."

The same statement was candid about what fans should not expect in the meantime. Laforteza will not take part in the Wildworld Tour's North American run, nor will she appear at promotional events for the remainder of 2026. The label said it looks "forward to welcoming her back as KATSEYE continues this next chapter together in 2027."

Also notable was the acknowledgment of the fandom, known as EYEKONS, whom the label thanked for "the continued love, support, and understanding you've shown Sophia and KATSEYE."

In Sophia's Own Words

Laforteza addressed the news directly, writing on her Instagram Stories that fans' "patience, grace and understanding" had meant a great deal to her. "Your kindness during this time has given me more strength than you know," she wrote, per Variety. "It hasn't been easy, but I have been putting in the work by receiving the care I need, learning the tools to better support myself, and doing everything I can to nurture my well-being."

She also spoke plainly about missing the rest of the tour. "It pains me deeply that I won't be able to participate in the remainder of the tour this year," she said. "I'm going to use this time to continue training and get myself to where I need to be again. As much as I wish I could simply push through, I've come to understand that sometimes having the courage to take a step back is what allows you to move forward."

Her closing note was forward-looking: "My hope is to return feeling happier, healthier, stronger, more grounded, and ready to give you everything I've been wanting to give you. I can't wait to share the stage with my sisters again and look out to all of you!"

A Hiatus That Followed Another

The announcement lands in a complicated season for the group. Laforteza's hiatus became public on Aug. 7, six months after her bandmate Manon Bannerman had announced a hiatus of her own — a reminder that even for a group built on relentless output, the human cost of that pace is real.

For a six-member act whose members come from the Philippines, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United States, line-up changes are never purely logistical. KATSEYE's whole proposition, right down to the name, is about six distinct personalities refracting light differently. A missing member registers in the harmonies, the formations, the camera choreography.

Who Is Sophia Laforteza?

Widely regarded as the leader of KATSEYE, Laforteza was born on Dec. 31, 2002, to actress Carla Guevara Laforteza and chef Godfrey Laforteza. She was performing almost from the start, notably appearing alongside her mother on the Philippine talk show She Said, She Said at age 5.

By the time she entered The Debut: Dream Academy — the 2023 HYBE and Geffen Records competition that formed the group — she was one of roughly 120,000 applicants. She finished first in the finale with a score of 88.33, representing the Philippines in a group whose formation was later chronicled in the Netflix docuseries Pop Star Academy: Katseye.

That result matters to the Filipino music conversation. Long before K-pop methodology was applied to a global girl group, OPM and the wider Filipino music scene had exported talent in every direction — and Laforteza's first-place finish made a Filipino performer the anchor of one of the most-watched group launches of the decade.

The Discography She's Returning To

The group debuted in June 2024 with the single "Debut," then broke through with "Touch." Their first EP, SIS (Soft Is Strong), arrived later that year. In April 2025, they released "Gnarly" as the lead single for their second EP, Beautiful Chaos. The response was mixed on release but the attention was undeniable: it became the group's first entry on the Billboard Hot 100, while Beautiful Chaos debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.

Its second single, "Gabriela," peaked within the top 40 of the Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance; the group was also nominated for Best New Artist at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards. Their third EP, Wild (2026), became their first No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

That is the commercial context Laforteza rejoins in 2027: a group at its chart peak, on a North American tour she will miss, with a creative identity — Y2K-inflected, shaped by creative director Humberto Leon — that has already travelled from Fendi and Gap campaigns to a partnership with Filipino fast food chain Jollibee.

Why This Announcement Reads Differently

K-pop-adjacent fandoms are used to hiatus statements that stay vague. This one did not. There is a date, a clear scope of what is and isn't happening, and a confirmation that the tools Laforteza has learned will carry into her return.

Whether that sets a new template for how labels handle artist welfare is an open question. What's certain is that when KATSEYE take the stage in 2027 as a full six, it'll be the first time in a long while — and arguably the most anticipated comeback of their career so far.
