Kid Rock is trading rap rock for revival tents on his new faith-inspired album 'Halfway 2 Jesus,' which features a collaboration with longtime friend Eminem — proving politics can't break a nearly 40-year Detroit friendship.

From Detroit Rap Roots to Arena Revivals

Kid Rock has never been easy to categorize. Over three decades, Robert James Ritchie has moved from Detroit's underground hip-hop scene to rap rock stardom, then to country rock, and back again. His 1998 breakout Devil Without a Cause sold 14 million copies and helped define the country-rap hybrid with singles like "Cowboy." Subsequent records such as Cocky, Rock n Roll Jesus, and the 2022 return-to-form Bad Reputation kept him in the cultural conversation. Now, the self-taught multi-instrumentalist is pivoting once more — this time toward faith.

Kid Rock's new Christian album, Halfway 2 Jesus, marks a distinct departure from his hard-partying catalog. The project centers on forgiveness and second chances, and it features an unlikely collaborator: Eminem.

A 40-Year Detroit Friendship That Survives Politics

Speaking on My View with Lara Trump, Kid Rock opened up about reuniting with fellow Detroit native Eminem for the record, describing the rapper as a "class act." The two have been friends for nearly four decades — a bond they have deliberately protected from political strain.

"We said years ago, we said, 'Man, let's not let politics divide us.' And we never did," Kid Rock said. "And so when I asked him to be part of this... he totally got it."

He framed the collaboration as a message bigger than music: "Two little foul-mouthed white rappers from Detroit maybe could set a good example for the rest of this country."

Given Kid Rock's vocal support for the Republican Party and Donald Trump, and Eminem's well-documented criticism of Trump, the pairing carries symbolic weight. Kid Rock — who has previously drawn controversy for his political statements — said the freedom to disagree is what makes America great.

"Since when can you not express your points and your views and your opinions?" he said, adding that politics has no place onstage.

Faith as a Longtime Companion, Not a Sudden Conversion

Despite the religious framing, Kid Rock pushed back on the idea that he has experienced a sudden conversion. He described the album as a reflection of a lifelong relationship with God.

"I didn't get saved. I'm still Kid Rock. I'm still going to drink a beer and smoke a cigar," he said. "I feel like I've always been right with God."

He noted the album's personal roots: his middle name, James, and his birth date, Jan. 17, 1971, correspond to the Bible verse James 1:17, which he said "basically says all good things come from God." The timing of the writing also mattered. Kid Rock said that following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, like many people, he began to grow closer to his faith — a shift that shaped the songwriting sessions behind Halfway 2 Jesus.

"This record is about second chances and forgiveness," he said. "It's about trying to heal some of the division in our country."

Revival Meets Rock Concert: The Live Vision

Where Kid Rock's arena career has long been built on high-energy shows — from his multi-platinum peak to his ongoing ties to political rallies — his ambitions for Halfway 2 Jesus blend the sacred and the secular. He outlined plans to stage Christian revival-style performances in arenas and stadiums.

"I wanted to create the songs that I wanted to go to church and hear," he explained. "And I want to have revivals, Saturday night revivals in arenas, stadiums, people drinking beer, having a good time, celebrating our Lord and Savior."

He described the proposed shows as a "full-on monster rock show" — a format that would fuse his classic concert production with the atmosphere of a religious gathering.

"I think that could do a lot of good in the world," he said.

An Unpredictable Chapter in an Unpredictable Career

Kid Rock's career has rarely followed a straight line. Born in Romeo, Michigan, he built his early reputation in Detroit's hip-hop scene before breaking through with a rap-rock sound and later shifting toward country rock. Halfway 2 Jesus adds yet another lane — one that suggests his arena years aren't ending so much as expanding into something new.

With an Eminem feature in hand and a revival tour concept on the table, Kid Rock appears intent on turning his latest chapter into a stadium-sized gospel-rock hybrid. Whether audiences follow him into that tent remains to be seen — but the unlikely pairing at its center already gives the project a story worth telling.
