West End Filipina actress Joanna Ampil will star as Norma Desmond in CueCraft Entertainment's Manila production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Sunset Boulevard,' set for August 2027 — her first Manila stage role since 2018.

A Homecoming Worthy of a Silver Screen Legend

Manila's theater scene is about to get a dose of dangerous Hollywood glamour. Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard is coming to the Philippine stage in a production by CueCraft Entertainment, scheduled for August 2027 — and the role of the iconic Norma Desmond will be taken on by none other than Joanna Ampil.

For Ampil, it marks a significant homecoming: it will be her first time staging a show in Manila since 2018, when she starred in the international premiere of Waitress as Jenna. Since then, the London-based Filipina has remained a fixture on international stages, but her return to a Manila production — in one of musical theater's most demanding leading roles — is a moment Filipino audiences have been waiting for.

A Character She Wants Audiences to Feel For

Norma Desmond is no ordinary role. The former silent-film star at the center of Sunset Boulevard is one of the most complex anti-heroes in the musical canon — a woman clinging to a glory that has long since passed her by. Ampil is approaching the part with both reverence and emotional clarity.

"I hope the audience will be captivated by [Norma Desmond's] presence and the grandeur of the show — because it will look lavish and beautiful — but will also leave the theatre feeling for her, knowing that all she wants is to be loved, valued, and remembered," Ampil said.

That quote gets to the heart of why Sunset Boulevard endures. Set in 1940s Hollywood, the story follows struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis, who encounters Norma — a silent-film has-been — and is drawn into her dangerous, delusional world of showbusiness. It's a story about fame, obsession, and the cruelty of an industry that forgets.

The Role That Won Nicole Scherzinger Top Honors

The timing of this Manila production is notable. In the recent Broadway and West End revival of Sunset Boulevard, Filipino-American actress and singer Nicole Scherzinger earned the 2024 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical and the 2025 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for her portrayal of Norma Desmond.

That a Filipina-American performer redefined the role on the world's biggest stages — and now a Filipina from the West End will bring her own interpretation to Manila — is a compelling narrative for OPM and Filipino music theater fans alike. It speaks to the depth of Filipino talent in musical theater globally.

From Miss Saigon to Manila: A Career Built on Big Roles

Ampil's career has been defined by landmark roles. At just seventeen, she auditioned in Manila for the original production of Miss Saigon and landed the lead role of Kim, eventually performing it in London's West End, in the original Australian production, and at the show's 10th Anniversary Performance. She has since taken on Mary Magdalene in the West End revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, Éponine and Fantine in Les Misérables, Grizabella in Cats, and Mimi in Rent, among many others.

In the Philippines, she made her theater debut in 2008 as Maria in West Side Story alongside Christian Bautista, and has since appeared as Maria Von Trapp in The Sound of Music, Nellie Forbush in South Pacific in Concert, and in the international premieres of The Bridges of Madison County and Waitress. Her film work in Ang Larawan earned her the Metro Manila Film Festival Award for Best Actress and the Gawad Urian Best Actress Award, among other honors.

Her recording career includes the musicals album Joanna Ampil (2007, JAY Records), pop albums Try Love (2010) and Joanna Ampil (2014, VIVA Records), and singles such as "Reach for the Stars," "Always Better," and "Memory."

What This Means for the Filipino Music Scene

While Sunset Boulevard is a musical, its arrival in Manila with a Filipina lead carries weight for the broader Filipino music and theater community. Ampil is part of a generation of Filipino performers who have built international careers while maintaining strong ties to home. Her return in a role as storied as Norma Desmond puts a spotlight on the caliber of talent the Philippines produces — and gives local audiences a rare chance to see a West End veteran interpret a character made famous by legends.

With CueCraft Entertainment producing and an August 2027 target, anticipation is already building. If Ampil's stated hope is any indication, Manila audiences can expect a Norma Desmond that is grand, lavish, and — above all — human.
