Jay-Z Accuser Recants: Jane Doe Admits 'I Have Never Met' the Rap Mogul

A woman who accused Jay-Z of rape has fully recanted her allegations, apologizing to the rapper and his family. The legal saga, which Jay-Z called a 'victory' when the case was dismissed, continues to unfold as the mogul pursues defamation claims against her former attorney.

In a dramatic turn in one of the most closely watched legal battles in hip-hop, the anonymous woman who accused Jay-Z of raping her when she was 13 years old has fully recanted her allegations. In a declaration filed Thursday in Manhattan federal court, the woman — identified only as Jane Doe — stated plainly: “Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter never raped me. I have never met or spoken to Mr. Carter.”

A Complete Reversal and an Apology

The declaration goes further than a simple retraction. Doe acknowledged the gravity of her claims, saying, “There is no truth to any of my claims against Mr. Carter.” She also issued a direct apology to the rapper and his family, specifically naming his wife, Beyoncé, expressing regret for the “immense pain” her accusations caused. “I understand my false accusations have caused Mr. Carter immense pain, suffering, and damage that can never be fully undone,” she wrote.

Her current attorney, J. Blair Newman, echoed the recantation in a statement, noting that while his client “maintains that she was a victim of sexual assault,” she was “entirely mistaken” when she identified Jay-Z as an attacker. Newman added that Doe “sincerely and unconditionally apologizes to Mr. Carter and his family.”

How the Allegations Unfolded

The saga began in late 2024 when Doe filed a lawsuit against Sean “Diddy” Combs, alleging she was raped at an after-party following the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000. She later amended the complaint to name Jay-Z as a second alleged assailant. Jay-Z vehemently denied the claims from the outset, calling them “heinous” and expressing deep concern for his family. “My only heartbreak is for my family,” he said shortly after the allegations surfaced in December 2024, referring to Beyoncé and their three children: Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir.

Doe voluntarily dismissed her lawsuit with prejudice in February 2025. At the time, Jay-Z celebrated the dismissal as a “victory,” though he emphasized the lasting toll on his loved ones. “The trauma that my wife, my children, loved ones and I have endured can never be dismissed,” he stated.

Even before the case was dropped, cracks in Doe’s account had begun to show. In a December 2024 interview with NBC News, she conceded there were “inconsistencies” in her story. One notable discrepancy involved her claim of speaking with musician Benji Madden at the party — a rep for the Good Charlotte rocker noted that he and his twin brother, Joel, were on tour in the Midwest at the time.

The Aftermath and Ongoing Legal Action

A month after the dismissal, Page Six reported that Doe was heard on a recording telling private investigators that Jay-Z did not rape her, while also claiming that attorney Tony Buzbee — who represented her initially — had “pushed” her to pursue the allegations. Jay-Z subsequently filed a lawsuit against Doe and Buzbee, accusing them of malicious prosecution, abuse of process, and defamation.

In her new declaration, Doe stressed that she was not threatened or coerced into recanting, nor had she received any money or promises of payment from Jay-Z or his representatives. She explained that she saw a Facebook advertisement in 2024 seeking people with sexual assault claims against Combs, which triggered memories of her own assault at 13. She contacted a law firm, and her case was eventually referred to Buzbee. Doe claimed she disclosed mental health conditions to the attorneys but was not questioned about how those conditions might affect her memory. She also said her allegations were not adequately vetted before the lawsuit was filed, and she eventually began doubting whether she had ever attended a celebrity party at all.

Jay-Z, who has publicly admitted the ordeal left him “heartbroken” and filled with “uncontrollable anger,” has yet to issue a new statement following the recantation.

A Career Built on Resilience

The legal drama has unfolded against the backdrop of Jay-Z’s enduring legacy as one of the most influential figures in music and business. Born Shawn Corey Carter in Brooklyn, he emerged from the Marcy Houses projects to become a cultural titan. As a co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records, he released his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, in 1996 — a project now widely regarded as a classic. Over 14 number-one albums on the Billboard 200, including The Blueprint, The Black Album, and 4:44, have cemented his status as a recording powerhouse. His 2009 single “Empire State of Mind” with Alicia Keys became an unofficial anthem for New York City, and his guest verses on tracks like Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella” delivered three more Hot 100 chart-toppers.

Beyond music, Jay-Z’s business acumen is legendary. He served as president and CEO of Def Jam Recordings from 2004 to 2007, helping launch the careers of Kanye West, Rihanna, and Ne-Yo. He co-founded Rocawear and the 40/40 Club, and in 2008 launched Roc Nation, a multi-disciplinary entertainment agency. His acquisition of Aspiro in 2015 led to the expansion of Tidal, the streaming service that later saw a majority stake acquired by Block, Inc. (then Square) in 2021. In 2019, he became the first hip-hop billionaire, and as of 2026, Forbes estimates his net worth at $2.8 billion — the highest of any music artist.

His awards shelf includes 25 Grammy Awards, four Emmy Awards, and a NAACP President’s Award. He was the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the eighth hip-hop act to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

As the legal proceedings against Buzbee and the unnamed accuser continue, the recantation marks a significant moment of vindication for Jay-Z — though the scars, as he has said, may never fully heal.
