Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp and more original cast members will return to Broadway for a one-night-only Rent 30th anniversary concert benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
A Landmark Reunion on Broadway
Three decades after Rent first electrified audiences and changed the sound of Broadway, the musical's original cast is coming back together. Tony winner Idina Menzel, Tony nominee Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, Tony nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega, Tony winner Wilson Jermaine Heredia and Fredi Walker will reprise the roles they originated in Rent, the 30th Anniversary Concert, a one-night-only benefit performance set for Monday, October 26, 2026, at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre.
The event will present the full show in concert and benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. While in-person tickets are already sold out, theater fans worldwide can still attend: $30 livestream tickets are available, opening the celebration to audiences far beyond New York. The livestream is produced in collaboration with The League of Live Stream Theater.
More Than 50 Alumni and Special Guests
The anniversary concert is not just a principal-cast reunion — it is a gathering of the extended Rent family. More than 50 past cast members and special guests will take part, spanning three decades of the show's history. Alongside the original stars, performers returning include original understudies and ensemble players Yassmin Alers, Gilles Chiasson, Shelley Dickinson, David Driver, Darius de Haas and Rodney Hicks.
Among the Rent alumni joining the celebration are Tony winner Natalie Venetia Belcon, Adam Chanler-Berat, Tony nominee Nicholas Christopher, Merle Dandridge, Trey Ellett, Jordan Fisher, Tony winner Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jose Llana, John Eric Parker, Jai Rodriguez, Antonique Smith, Tony nominee Ephraim Sykes and Tony winner Aaron Tveit. More of the cast will be announced in the coming weeks, though performers are subject to change.
The Original Creative Team Returns
The reunion extends behind the scenes as well. Rent's original director, five-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif, will return to helm the evening. The show's original music supervisor, Tim Weil, will also come back, leading original Rent band members Kenny Brescia, Jeff Potter and Daniel A. Weiss, who will be joined by Steve Gelfand.
The one-night-only presentation is produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and Andy Jones, founder of Baseline Theatrical. This production of Rent is licensed by Music Theatre International.
A Musical That Redefined Broadway
Jonathan Larson's Rent features a book, music and lyrics by Larson, with music arrangements by Steve Skinner. The original concept and additional lyrics were provided by Billy Aaronson, with music supervision and additional arrangements by Weil. The dramaturg was Lynn Thompson.
Larson's Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical reimagines La Bohème in the AIDS-era East Village of New York City, following a tight-knit group of artists navigating love, loss and survival at the turn of a generation. With its electrifying score and deeply human stories, Rent captures the urgency of living fully in the face of uncertainty — a cultural touchstone that continues to inspire audiences to measure life in love.
The show debuted at the New York Theatre Workshop before transferring to Broadway's Nederlander Theatre in 1996, where it played 5,123 performances before closing on September 7, 2008. The original Broadway producers were Jeffrey Seller, Kevin McCollum and Allan S. Gordon.
Menzel's Journey From Rent to a Landmark Career
For Idina Menzel, the anniversary concert marks a return to the role that launched her career. Menzel made her Broadway debut as performance artist Maureen Johnson in Rent in 1996, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She would go on to originate the role of Elphaba in Wicked in 2003, winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, and later earned a third Tony nomination for If/Then in 2014.
Beyond the stage, Menzel voiced Elsa in Disney's Frozen franchise, and "Let It Go" — the song she recorded for the first film — peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. As a recording artist, she has released seven studio albums, including I Stand (2008) and Holiday Wishes (2014), the latter peaking at number six on the Billboard 200 to become her highest-charting studio album to date.
Now, nearly thirty years after she first stepped into Maureen's shoes, Menzel will join her original castmates once more — a reminder of how Rent continues to bring its community together, and a rare chance for fans to witness a landmark of Broadway history in the making.
